Shipping lines to remove Australia congestion charges

Major shipping lines have announced the withdrawal of their congestion surcharges in Australia, as there are signs of positive operational developments.

Maersk Line will remove the Sydney congestion fee, applicable to cargo with effect from 15 M  arch. The Danish carrier noted, "the operational situation in Sydney is improving, with vessel schedules expected to stabilise from mid-March."

In addition, its 2M Alliance partner, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has decided to withdraw the congestion surcharge, which was implemented for all cargo destined to any Australian ports, as "the port operations in all the country's ports are resuming as normal," MSC said. This measure will be applicable to all exported cargo from any origin except the US, Canada and Mexico to all Australian ports as from 11 March.

In the meantime, Hapag-Lloyd has also confirmed the removal of its congestion surcharge in the port of Sydney in view of the positive operational situation. This withdrawal is applicable to all import and export shipments to/from Sydney, according to the German line, with effect from 22 March.

On the same date, the Hamburg-based shipping company will also cancel the peak season surcharge from   (China, China/Hong Kong and China/Macau) to Sydney.
