Invoke Safety of the World
To invoke safety responding to various natural phenomena occurred recently, Gianyar County organized the Tawur Nawa Gempang ritual in the Pusering Jagat Temple, Pejeng, Tampaksiring, Monday (Mar 17). The ritual was officiated over by Ida Pedanda Wayahan Bun from Griya Sanur Pejeng and Ida Pedanda Buda Jelantik from Griya Taman Sukawati. The offerings in use belonged to mid-level on the basis of manca sata, mepenangkab, chicken, white duck and white goat.
The ritual committee also doubling as the Assistant I of Regional Secretary of Gianyar, Cokorda Rai Widiarsa P., said the ritual was meant to invoke the safety of the world (universe) and avoid calamities or disasters. From the end of 2013 until early 2014, Gianyar in particular had been afflicted by a variety of disasters such as fallen trees, landslides, floods and other social calamities. “Hopefully, with the implementation of this ritual, we all can be avoided from any disasters,” he said.
Selection of the Pusering Jagat Temple, according to Cok Rai Widiarsa, was based on consideration that it denoted the center of Bali or the universe, so it was expected the earth or the universe was kept away from any dangers or disasters. Additionally, the Pusering Jagat Temple at Pejeng was also one of the sad kahyangan temples in Bali. It was based on historical and archaeological heritages which were currently stored in the Pusering Jagat Temple.
Ida Pedanda Wayahan Bun from Griya Sanur Pejeng, Tampaksiring, when giving sermons (dharma vacana) said the pelebah jagat ritual posed a ritually anticipative effort to invoke safety in response to various natural phenomena happened lately. It referred to the content of various palm-leaf manuscripts such as the Rogha Sanghara Bhumi, Lebur Sangsa and Ceciren Gumi Manut Catur Yuga. “The ceremony to invoke safety should be routinely performed so that the universe always gets protection from God Almighty,” said Ida Pedanda.
The ritual was attended by the Regent AA Gde Agung Bharata and Deputy Regent Made Mahayastra, representatives of provincial government, county/municipality across Bali and customary villagers of Pejeng. (BTN/015)
